Gastro-esophageal Reflux Diet
* This diet can also be used as a diet for esophagitis, hiatal hernia, and heartburn
Objective: To avoid reflux of stomach contents in to the esophagus and to reduce irritation of the esophagus.
Suggestions:
- Maintain an upright position after eating. Avoid eating within 3-4 hours before bedtime.
- Avoid large meals.
- If necessary, a reduced calorie diet for weight control is recommended.
- Choose a few of the following foods daily to obtain adequate vitamin C intake, as citrus foods are not allowed.
- Cantaloupe
- Honeydew melon
- Cabbage
- Cauliflower
- Cranberry juice
- Asparagus
- Broccoli
- Brussel sprouts
- Grape juice
- Greens Spinach
- Acorn squash
- Potatoes
- Peppers
- Strawberries
Foods to Avoid:
- Coffee, tea, colas
- Chocolate
- Alcohol
- Citrus fruits: lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, tangerine
- Tomatoes
- Spearmint and Peppermint
Food to Limit:
- Fatty foods
- pastries
- Doughnuts
- Cream sauce
- Gravy
- Fried food
- Sausage
- Hotdogs
- Luncheon meats
- Brisket
- Spareribs
- Chips
- Cream dips
- Desserts
